Razgatlioglu imperious as he claims Hungarian hat-trick: "It was an amazing weekend…"
The Turkish superstar was unbeatable at Balaton Park as he extended his Championship lead to 26 points over Bulega
Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) claimed a third consecutive hat-trick as the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship visited Hungary for the first time in 35 years. Balaton Park Circuit hosted the action for the first time where the milestone 1000th race took place, with ‘El Turco’ claiming victory in the landmark outing as well as Race 1 and Race 2, extending his Championship lead to 26 points ahead of Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati) heading into the summer break.
A HAT-TRICK IN HUNGARY: “It was an amazing weekend!”
Razgatlioglu started from pole position for the Tissot Superpole Race, which was the Championship’s 1000th race, and got a good start in the mixed conditions. The Turk, like the majority of the field, opted to use slick tyres. He led in the first few laps before running wide at Turn 1 around the halfway distance, handing the lead briefly to Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team) and then Sam Lowes (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team). The #14 built up a gap to the chasing ‘El Turco’ before he caught up and overtook the #14, before going on to take victory.
Race 2 was considerably more straight forward for the #1, who led every lap from pole position to claim a Hungarian hat-trick. He was able to break away at the start of the race and went unchallenged throughout the 21-lap duel, eventually beating Bulega by more than ten seconds to extend his lead in the Championship standings to more than a race win points haul; the gap between them now 26 points.
Discussing his perfect weekend, Razgatlioglu stated: “It was an amazing weekend. We started very strong because this is a new track for everyone. I adapted quickly. We did a good job with my team. I’m happy with this. The Superpole Race was very difficult due to many wet patches on track. We just had a dry line but some parts were still wet. We didn’t make a mistake, just riding and focused on pace. This race was very important because I won races 800 and 900, and I needed to win 1000! I’m really happy. This is a very special race for me.”
THE CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHT: “I’m looking race by race… very important for me”
In terms of the title battle, Razgatlioglu gained points on Bulega across the weekend. It was a four-point margin between the pair heading into Hungary, but leaving Balaton Park, the gap is out to 26 points. Razgatlioglu’s wins, coupled with Bulega finishing P2 in Race 1 and Race 2, but 13th in the Superpole Race, means the gap is 26 points – with Razgatlioglu having more than a race win in hand over ‘Bulegas’.
On the title fight, Razgatlioglu stated: “I’m not on focused on the Championship, I’m looking race by race; this is very important for me. The next race is at Magny-Cours and last year I didn’t race there. I’ll try to get a hat-trick there. I hope we win again because I’m on consecutive nine wins. Magny-Cours is one of my favourite tracks and I need to win there because Aragon and Jerez, I think all Ducatis will be very strong. We’re the Championship leader and we’ve got a bigger gap, but this is racing and everything is possible.”
